Throughout the year I’ve been humbled by a group called ARE Poets, a youth organization that encourages students to share their story and find their voice through poetry and spoken word performance. Every Wednesday is a new experience, as they come together to learn from various teachers for weekly programing. Topics range from the importance of voice, metaphor, posture, projection and simply letting go in order to let the creative process happen.
Here are some photo’s from the last workshop I facilitated (March 27th) that explored the impact of imagery and how we build our own stories from what we choose to pay attention to. The tables were filled with dozens of books, magazines, glue, scissors and odd-end scraps. It amazes me the diversity in perspective! Everyone had the same materials and created wildly different images.
At the end we had a chance to write a poem relating to the collages. It has been a gift to learn from these kids, and to remember a time when the imagination was boundless. The future is in our youth, thank heavens for that!
